Weltenburger Kloster is a German brewer that claims to be "the oldest Monastery-Brewery in the world. Since 1050." That's just 10 years after Weihenstephan began brewing. This is their "Asam Bock" which is in the style of a doppelbock. They call it a "dunkler doppelbock", and it is dark, so it deserves the name dunkler. It poured a dark brown with a sizeable tan head that lasted for a few minutes. It really looks good in the glass, and it tastes even better than it looks. This is a very rich, malty doppelbock - one of the best I have ever had. It smelled of sweet malt and caramel, and the flavor hinted of raisins and molasses, and lots of malt. It was somewhat low in carbonation, but had a rich texture. At 6.9% alcohol, it wasn't too strong, so I didn't feel like I couldn't finish the bottle. I can easily see why Weltenburger has been around for nearly 1000 years. This is an excellent beer, and I'll be looking around for some of their other varieties.Friday, July 25, 2008

Hello, while searching for pictures of certain german brews online, I found your blog post.
I agree this beer is indeed outstanding, I like it very much, and my husband even loves it.
But what looks weird in your picture is the fact that you poured it into a wheatbeer glass. That is only for the summer brews!
Yes, wheat beer is not drunken outside of June to September!! Since Doppelbocks will never ever be drunken outside of November 11 to Ash Wednesday, those 2 never meet naturely...

The other Weltenburger brews are outstanding as well, by the way. We have recently tried both Hefeweizen versions, the hell (bright) and dunkel (dark) versions, and both were great. The bright version I would even call perfect. I will buy that again if I see it.
